To many he is known as “La Voz de Oro”. As you hear his interpretations you will see why this musician has earned the title. David is known for his emotional songs and believes in performing them as though he is personally experiencing the emotions the songs reflect.
David Marez was born in the small coastal town of Mathis, Texas. As a young man he was influenced by the likes of Joe Bravo, Little Joe Hernandez, Sonny Ozuna, and Freddie Martinez to name a few. His rhythm and blues influence came from the likes of Al Jarreau, Ray Charles, Luther Vandross, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, and other artists.
David states “As a singer, it’s good to be an entertainer, but you should never abandon what you’re doing. In other words, don’t let the showman take away from the interpretation.”
“I let the song come first and the rest second, because the mind and energy shouldn’t split. One should put all heart and soul into each song.”
“I’m very sentimental, so when I do love songs, whether they’re happy or sad, I want to feel the words in me. I want my body to be the passage they take. To me music is like breathing.”
“When I first started I learned from the class acts of tejano and today I still continue to learn.”
David began his musical history in the 70’s. Neighborhood garage bands are where he began his career. Shortly after he joined the Royal Jesters as a lead singer. After years with the Jesters he formed his own band “People” with some of the top tejano talent in Texas, they included musicians as Joe Posada—Saxophone, Richard Solis—Drums, Steve Velasquez—Lead Guitar, Pete Garza—Bass Guitar and Julian Carrillo on keyboards.
1980’s he competed in Festival OTI and came in second place. Marez then reformed “People” and in 1989 at the Tejano Music Awards went on to win Album of the Year for “Sold Out”, “Song of the Year for “Fijate”, and Male Vocalist of the year. In 1990 and 1993 he was awarded Male Vocalist of the Year at the Annual Texas Talent Musicians Association (TTMA) Awards.
1990’s Marez continued recording hit albums. He expanded to Mexico and prepared to go into video work.
Today he continues to tour and record. In 2004 he completed a cd titled “Bringin it Back” on Bob Gallarza’s On The Edge Productions label. The studio musicians included notable talent as Joe Posada, Stanley Revillas, Stephanie Montiel, Joel Guzman, Al Gomez, Lonny LaLane, Chente Barrera, and Bob Gallarza. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2005 Tejano Music Awards.
In 2006 Marez received a grammy nomination for the work he did with Henry Hernandez and Oscar Lawson. The result is the 11-track "Odyssey The Journey," with the smooth-voiced Marez on vocals. It was a joyful trip down memory lane with new versions of hits including "Chicanita," "Carino Nuevo," "Hermoso Carino," "Castigo," "Contigo a la Distancia" and "Your Tender Lips." The studio musicians included top talent such as Eddie Lewis on trumpet and flugelhorn, Sal Gonzalez on trombone, Martin Langford on tenor and alto sax, Stan Revilles on bass, Chente Barrera on drums and Gallarza on guitar.
On November 11, Marez was inducted into the 2006 Tejano R.O.O.T.S Hall of Fame.
His most current project which was released in January 2007 is his latest cd titled “Corazon de Oro”. The executive producer is long-time friend and fellow Royal Jester Joe Posada and was produced by another Royal Jester Gilbert Velasquez. The cd delivers a combination of new and classic Marez hits performed by studio musicians Chente Barrera on drums and background vocals, the legendary Al Gomez on Trumpet, Posada on Sax, Velasquez on Guitars, Mario Ortiz on Keys, Ray Diaz de Leon on Accordion, Angel Flores on Bass, and Leslie Lugo doing some back-up vocals.
The influences of such worldly music as Middle Eastern, Asian, Latin and Caribbean sounds are what he hopes to incorporate into the tejano sound. Always the innovator Marez has accomplished this in “Llorare” “Andale”, and the cumbias on the “Yo Soy Tejano” cd. Marez continues to include different rhythms and ethnic sounds which he hopes will keep the music fresh and exciting for his fans and the future tejano musicians. He hopes to give them something to build on and to take the music a step beyond. As he states “Tejano music is an ever constant evolving sound. Tejano music is not only a state of mind it is a state of being.”
As David
Marez states "I hope my music is as exciting to my fans as it is to me
recording it. I will continue to sing, record, and be what I am, and that
is a tejano music fan."
